Stonefish
Stonefish swim around the north coast of Australia from Brisbane and Geraldton. They are normally found Among sand, mud and rocks. They dig a shallow hole and then get into the hole. They push the rest of the sand and mud around themselves and because their bodies are the same colour as a rock they look like a rock because they sit so still. they wait until a small fish swims past and they jump up and eat it in a matter of milliseconds.
Stone fish are about 60 centimetres in height and 30-45 centimetres long. They have 13 grooved, needle sharp spines, that are attached to venom glands. these spines stick up when the stone fish feels threatened. A little venom is released when pressure is put on the spines. This makes it one of the deadliest animals ever. The stonefish is quite placid though, not aggressive at all. Even though the stonefish is a fish it does not have scales and they also can be out of the water for 15-20 hours. They have a rough greenish brownish body that makes them look a lot like a rock or a stone. Their heads are quite large and turn upwards so that they can reach up to small unsuspecting fish and eat them.
Stonefish have a diet that contains small fish, shrimp and other crustaceans.
This is a short clip about the stonefish if you would like to see it.
